In his Divine Comedy, Dante tell us that in the North of beautiful Italy, there is a lake at the foot of the Alps: this is Lake Garda. With its waters surrounded by mountains, the lake offers enchanting scenery described by poets and writers. These lines by the Great Poet in Canto XX of the Inferno are dedicated to Virgil, who came from near Garda. The lake itself covers an entire region, with the western shore in Lombardy, the eastern side in Veneto and the north in Trentino. A lake capable of arousing deep emotion, an historic heritage and clear waters for sports enthusiasts.
Into the southern part of the lake projects the peninsula of Sirmione with the ruins of Catullu's (photo) Roman villa and the modern spa facilities. This peninsula is one of the main attractions for tourists from Italy and abroad, with its Congress Center for major meetings and events and remains of great historical interest. An eventfull history, an important testimonial for that strip of land jutting out into the lake, like the meetings between the American poet Ezra Pound and the Irish writer James Joyce. One of the many well-known personalities who lived on Lake Garda was Gabriele D´Annunzio. At his Vittoriale, his dreams came true, as his imagination and his love of life, story-telling and tranquillity were gives free rein in the peaceful setting only these shore can offer. According to D´Annunzio, there is nothing like the radiant piece of calm Garda, which gently cradles us, encouraging us in idleness. The Mausoleum (photo) where D´Annunzio is buried alongside his companions of adventure is a huge marble structure on the Cargnacco hill overlooking Lake Garda.

A holiday for all tastes. Lake Garda and the surrounding area offers a bit of everything and really knows show to attract the tourists. La Locanda del Gardoncino è situata a Manerba del Garda in provincia di Brescia (nord Italia), comodissima per chi arriva in aereo o in macchina. Manerba del Garda è parte della Valtenesi, composta di sette Comuni, è territorio rinomato per la produzione di un vino chiaro, detto Chiaretto del Garda. Gode di una ottima posizione con una splendida vista lago; si trova infatti sul promontorio di Gardoncino una delle cinque frazioni di Manerba, a pochi passi dal Porto di Dusano, a poche centinaia di metri dalle rive del Lago di Garda.

Sirmione stands on a peninsula with a minimum broadness of 120 mt which stretches out for about 4 km in Lake Garda from the southern shore. Sirmione is nowadays an important touristic-climatic and thermal bath centre: the first information on the underwater Boiola source (69 °C), collected in 1889, date back to 1546; the first establishment dates back to 1898. In the recent years there has been an significant development due to thermal cures.
Desenzano, Piazza Malvezzi in front of the old harbour (photo), the heart of Desenzano, the site of an interesting antiques market and a popular meeting place for residents and tourists. Open air cafés in summer for refreshments during the hot Garda summer. Steps and benches occupied by hoardes of youngsters, porticos of shops and the statue of St. Angela Merici, the patron saint of Desenzano. It is believed that the name “Desenzano” came from the Latin name Decentius, the owner of the holding and of the IV century villa whose excavation can nowadays be visited.
Castles, harbours, history, tourism, the Catullus airport in Villafranca near Verona, a lake combining tradition and modern attractions. Lake Garda offers all this and more today, all set harmoniously in the enchanting natural environment.
